New from Care for Real

Care for Real sent us a wonderful thank you letter for the toys we donated last week. The agency was able to hand out 600 toys to children in Edgewater and Uptown who might not get any other gifts this Christmas. Greg stopped by the agency to donate some toys and heard this shocking news: Care for Real is now providing monthly aid to 4,000 families. These are hard times for many Americans. Whatever the challenge, Care for Real seems to be able to do more and more. We should help this fine agency whenever we can.

Division One 2011 Holiday Party

The North Shore Kiwanis Club again hosted Division One’s annual holiday party at the Edgewater Beach Café. We shared good company, a fine lunch, and some excellent Christmas Carols, which were led by Phyllis Nickels and Maria Bappert.

I-I District Governor John Vanderheyden joined us for the event. He gave a great speech that included what motivated him to be committed to Kiwanis service. He also urged all of us to develop our own elevator speech, a short, compelling pitch about what keeps us loyal to Kiwanis.

We also collected more than 75 toys, which were donated to Care for Real. While we thank everyone who brought a gift, special thanks go out to John Stephan and Oscar Roman who brought several bags of gifts. This toy collection has grown every year, and we look forward to doing even more next year to Serve the Children of the World while we share Kiwanis fellowship.

The North Shore Club also needs to thank: President Greg Katzman who started the toy collection three years ago (Greg’s car broke down, which is why he could not join us), Kim Kaulus who managed event finances, and Phyllis Nickels who set up the event. We appreciate the hard work of pianist Chris White and the staff at the Edgewater Beach Café.

May whatever holidays you celebrate be joyous, and let’s all look forward to 2012 as a new year for Kiwanis fun and service.

Ron Messier

I just read in Aville (Andersonville) blog that our long time club member and friend Ron Messier, the owner of Pauline’s Restaurant, has died. No other information was given. I will update this post as soon as more information comes out.

For myself, I will Ron was a great gentleman and very generous to the club. He will be missed and remembered.

Update: Since writing this post, I learned that Ron died on Friday, November 19, and he was buried on Monday, November 22. If other details become available, I will add them.

Division One Thanksgiving Luncheon

One of our favorite annual events will be held at Lane Tech High School on Tuesday, November 22 at noon. The Lake View club is hosting the event with great support from Lane’s Key Club. This is a great opportunity to see friends and cheer on the young people from Lane and their mentors from Lake View.

Loyola Circle K Scores for Neighborhood Kids

Carrying on its long time tradition, Circle K at Loyola hosted its annual Halloween Safe House. 30-40 children came from Edgewater and Rogers Park. They are students at Swift, Goudy, and Disney Schools. Circle put together a great program of games and activities, including pumpkin decorations. We thank Kim Kaulus and the good folks at Gethsemane Garden Center who donated 200 pumpkins for this great cause. Three cheers for Circle K for taking time out on a Saturday to make neighborhood kids happy.

Nancy Turns 85

At last week’s meeting we celebrated Nancy Buckler’s 85th birthday. Nancy has been a major contributor to our club and its service to the community. We wish her a happy birthday with many more to come. We also wish happy birthday to Gunter Marx, who recently turned 88.

School Supplies

The club collected two boxes and a few bags of school supplies which were delivered to the Alderman’s office. Clay collected the supplies, and Greg delivered them.

This is an important project because teachers (who are not getting raise) end up buying school supplies for their students. Our contributions help them — and the students.
